ADC Proposes Collective Leadership Model to Unite Opposition Ahead of 2027 Polls

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has introduced a new power-sharing arrangement aimed at strengthening unity within Nigeria’s opposition bloc as preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather momentum.

The proposed structure, described as a “collegiate system,” seeks to replace the traditional winner-takes-all approach with a more inclusive model that emphasizes shared leadership—even after the emergence of a presidential flagbearer.

A leading voice in the party’s reform efforts, Lukman Salihu, revealed the initiative during an appearance on The Morning Show on Arise TV on Monday.

According to him, the framework is designed to ensure that governance—should the party secure victory—will be driven by collective responsibility rather than concentrated authority.

“What we are building is a collegiate framework. It is not a system where one individual takes all,” Salihu said.
“Our leaders are committed to ensuring that if we form the next government, it will not resemble an emperor ruling over an empire. Decisions will reflect a team-driven approach.”

The move comes amid heightened political maneuvering among opposition heavyweights such as Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Atiku Abubakar, and Rotimi Amaechi, whose supporters continue to advance competing interests.

Despite this, Salihu downplayed concerns of internal division, describing the situation as a natural feature of democratic politics.

“What we are witnessing is healthy contestation. Without it, politics loses its essence,” he noted.

He further explained that the proposed system is structured to keep all aspirants actively involved, regardless of the outcome of party primaries.

“While one candidate will eventually emerge, that person will do so as part of a broader team—not as someone who sidelines others,” he said.

Salihu also expressed optimism that leading contenders would remain committed to the collective vision, citing Amaechi as an example of a figure likely to stay engaged even if he does not secure the ticket.

In addition, the ADC has finalized a governance blueprint rooted in a manifesto adopted during its most recent national convention, signaling its readiness to present a unified front ahead of the next electoral cycle.
