Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has announced plans to establish the Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri Foundation after leaving office, saying the foundation will provide scholarships and other forms of support to vulnerable members of society.
Fintiri made the disclosure at a public lecture organised to commemorate his 59th birthday in Yola, the Adamawa State capital. According to him, the foundation is part of efforts to sustain his commitment to human development beyond his tenure.
Dedicating his 59th birthday to reflecting on democracy, development, and people-centred governance, the governor said the true measure of life lies in the impact an individual makes on society. He expressed gratitude to Almighty God for sparing his life, adding that birthdays should serve as moments of deep personal reflection rather than mere celebrations.
“What matters most is not the number of years a person has lived, but the contributions made towards addressing societal challenges and advancing the common good,” Fintiri said.
The governor said his journey through childhood, education, business, family life, and politics had reinforced his conviction that leadership and governance were central to achieving meaningful development.
He explained that he personally selected former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to deliver the birthday lecture because of his commitment to democratic governance and national development, as well as his longstanding interest in the affairs of Adamawa State.
Recalling Osinbajo’s visits to the state during his tenure as vice president, Fintiri said their interaction in September 2019, shortly after he assumed office as governor, influenced his administration’s approach to addressing traffic challenges in Yola through improved infrastructure and the construction of flyovers in the state capital.
Fintiri also highlighted his administration’s efforts to promote unity among the state’s more than 80 ethnic nationalities, saying it had worked to reduce the influence of ethnic and religious divisions and promote a shared sense of purpose. He said the next phase of development should build on the progress made in Adamawa and extend similar principles of unity and inclusive governance to Nigeria as a whole.
The governor acknowledged the support of his wife, Hajiya Lami Ahmadu Fintiri, his children, and other well-wishers, thanking them for their contributions to his personal and political journey.
The public lecture brought together political leaders and other stakeholders to examine the relationship between democracy, development, leadership, and people-centred governance.
