NPA Begin Drug, Alcohol Tests for Truck Drivers

APM Terminals Apapa, in collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), has launched a drug and alcohol screening initiative for external truck drivers operating at the Apapa port, as part of their commitment to enhancing operational safety.

The screenings, conducted at the port entrance with the support of Port Police and Port Health Services, include breathalyser tests to ensure that drivers are sober prior to entering the terminal.

Lagos Port Manager, Adebowale Lawal Ibrahim, stated that this initiative aims to guarantee that heavy-duty vehicle drivers remain fully alert while performing their duties.

He emphasized that assessing the condition of drivers is crucial for maintaining safety within the port, noting that regular testing would deter substance abuse and promote compliance among operators.

In the latest screening, 30 drivers were evaluated, with three testing positive for alcohol consumption. Authorities observed that this represents a decrease compared to previous screenings.

Kamal Alhraishat, Managing Director of APM Terminals Apapa, mentioned that the company has recently achieved 636 days without a lost time injury and is striving to maintain this record by extending safety measures to include third-party drivers.

Alhraishat cautioned that driving under the influence presents significant dangers not only to the drivers but also to other road users, port personnel, and vital infrastructure.

He further added that ongoing enforcement, coupled with awareness initiatives, would assist in addressing issues related to substance use among certain drivers and promote safer practices over time.
