Barely months after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a prominent Adamawa State gubernatorial aspirant, Chief Maurice Vunobolki, has resigned from the ruling party.

Chief Vunobolki announced his resignation on Tuesday during a world press conference held at his Gubernatorial Campaign Office in Yola.

The seasoned politician explained that his decision followed a series of developments that pointed to a systematic erosion of democratic principles within the Adamawa State chapter of the APC.

“It has become apparent recently that assurances are no longer being upheld,” Chief Vunobolki stated. “Developments on the part of the state government and the APC in Adamawa State indicate a complete departure from the agreed terms of a transparent process.”

The gubernatorial hopeful alleged credible and evidential indications of irregular membership registration. He specifically cited cases where individuals’ National Identification Numbers (NIN) were being used without their consent, allegedly aimed at creating a bloated membership voting population in Yola North Local Government Area.

He further accused certain influential figures of coordinating efforts to unfairly manipulate internal party processes.

Lamenting his decades of experience in Nigeria’s political landscape, Chief Vunobolki said: “As a long-standing participant in Nigeria’s political space, I recognize the signs of a system tilting towards imposition rather than democratic choices.”

He revealed that his resignation from the APC came after extensive consultations with stakeholders across Adamawa State. He described the move as necessary to allow him to pursue a more credible and democratic platform—one where transparency, fairness, and equal opportunities for all would be guaranteed.

While reaffirming his commitment to protecting the political will and mandate of the people, Chief Vunobolki called on his supporters across the 21 local government areas of Adamawa State to immediately withdraw their memberships from the APC.

“I urge my followers to also resign from the APC and await further guidance on the next steps,” he said.

He promised to announce his new political platform in the coming days, adding that he remains fully committed to pursuing his gubernatorial ambition on a platform that respects internal democracy.

Chief Vunobolki’s departure marks the second major defection from the party in the state within three months, raising questions about internal cohesion ahead of the next election cycle.
