Tension in Adamawa as Residents Shut Down Community Over Boko Haram Attack

Tension erupted in Shuwa community, Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, on Friday as angry residents staged a massive shutdown protest following a recent Boko Haram attack that reportedly killed one person and abducted eight others.

The peaceful but emotionally charged demonstration brought the community to a standstill as grieving women, youths, children and elderly residents flooded the streets, demanding urgent government intervention over worsening insecurity.

Protesters were seen chanting passionately, “We want peace! We need security!” as fear, frustration and outrage swept through the troubled community.

Commercial and farming activities were paralysed as residents abandoned their daily businesses to protest what they described as the government’s failure to protect lives and property from relentless insurgent attacks.

For many residents, the latest assault was the breaking point.

Locals say fear has taken over the once-busy farming community, with many villagers now too terrified to return to their farmlands amid growing cases of midnight raids, killings and abductions by Boko Haram fighters.

The latest protest again exposed the deepening humanitarian crisis in Madagali — a border council area repeatedly ravaged by insurgency attacks, mass displacement and economic devastation over the years.

Ironically, the unrest erupted barely one week after Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, publicly warned terrorists to leave the state or face decisive military action during an event in Mubi.

Despite the governor’s tough warning, residents insist the attacks have continued unabated, leaving communities vulnerable and traumatised.

Madagali, the governor’s home local government area, has remained one of the hardest-hit regions in Adamawa, suffering repeated Boko Haram invasions that have claimed lives, destroyed livelihoods and displaced thousands of families.

Friday’s protest underscored rising public anger and desperation, with residents accusing authorities of failing to break the deadly cycle of violence ravaging communities across the state.
