Nwonyo Fishing Festival Winner Secures N10 Million Prize

Haruna Sale has been declared the winner of the 2026 edition of the Nwonyo Fishing Festival in Taraba State after successfully catching a fish that weighed 55.6 kilograms, thereby earning a grand prize of N10 million.

Governor Agbu Kefas Presents Gift

Ismaila Yakubu finished in second place with a catch weighing 52.6 kilograms, receiving N3 million, while Emmanuel Daniel took third place with a fish weighing 18.2 kilograms.

The event, which took place at Lake Nwonyo in the Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State, attracted numerous tourists and dignitaries from both within and outside Nigeria, further solidifying its reputation as a significant cultural and tourism event.During the festival, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu referred to the event as an essential platform for fostering unity, community cohesion, and national integration.

Represented by the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, the president praised Governor Agbu Kefas for revitalizing the festival after a prolonged period of neglect.

He emphasized that the governor’s vision is in line with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, especially in utilizing tourism for sustainable development.

Tinubu also revealed ongoing initiatives aimed at obtaining global recognition for the festival through UNESCO.

Governor Kefas, in his address, underscored the festival’s significance in preserving cultural heritage, promoting economic growth, and enhancing community involvement.

He remarked that the increase in international participation signifies Taraba State’s rising reputation as a safe and appealing destination for tourism and investment.

Elder statesman Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, represented by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, characterized the revival of the festival as a symbol of unity and a driver of economic sustainability.

Additionally, the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, praised the initiative and announced plans for cultural exchange.
