Adamawa Innovator Bags National SMEDAN Award, Earns State Recognition

An Adamawa-based inventor and entrepreneur, Malam Mohammad Dalhatu, has received widespread commendation after emerging as one of the recipients of the 2026 SMEDAN Award of Excellence, a recognition that has further highlighted the growing impact of grassroots innovation in Nigeria.

Dalhatu, who is physically challenged, was honoured during the 2026 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Day celebration held in Abuja on June 27. He was recognised by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) for developing practical technologies that address everyday challenges.

Among his notable innovations are rechargeable fans, cooking stoves powered by used engine oil, electric bucket water heaters, and other locally designed solutions aimed at improving daily living.

The award also makes Dalhatu the only innovator from Nigeria’s North-East geopolitical zone to receive the prestigious recognition this year, underscoring the region’s growing contribution to indigenous technology and entrepreneurship.

Speaking during the presentation of the award, Adamawa State Commissioner for Entrepreneurship Development, Hammanjumba Gatugel, described Dalhatu’s achievement as a proud moment for both the state and its people.

According to the commissioner, the state government remains committed to supporting innovators by creating an enabling environment that will transform creative ideas into sustainable businesses capable of generating jobs and boosting economic development.

He praised Dalhatu’s resilience, determination, and creativity, noting that his success serves as a source of inspiration, especially for young entrepreneurs and persons living with disabilities.

Gatugel further stressed that promoting innovation and entrepreneurship remains one of the state’s priorities because of their role in improving livelihoods and driving economic growth.

The award presentation was witnessed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Entrepreneurship Development, Dr. Yusuf Peter Adilbakriya, management staff of the ministry, and members of Dalhatu’s family, who joined in celebrating the national honour.
