Sixty-eight Chibok Girls Receive Laptops from British Journalist Isha Sesay

Sixty-eight Chibok Girls who survived the infamous 2014 Chibok abduction and are now students at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) have received brand new laptops from British journalist and humanitarian, Isha Sesay. The donation was part of a heartfelt ceremony marking the 11th anniversary of the mass abduction that shocked the world.

Held on AUN’s campus in Yola, the event served as both a commemoration and a celebration of resilience. It honored the journey of the girls—now women—who have defied the trauma of their past to pursue education and shape a new future.

Sesay, who has consistently championed the cause of the Chibok girls, made the announcement virtually on January 29, during a Zoom call with the students. She delivered a powerful message of hope and affirmation:

“You are not defined by the darkness of your past. These tools are keys to unlocking your potential – proof that the world believes in your future.”

She emphasized that the laptops are more than electronic devices—they are a symbol of global unity, courage, and the enduring value of education.

AUN President, Dr. Dewayne Frazier, also addressed the gathering, passionately reframing the girls’ public identity.

“These are not the ‘Chibok girls’ frozen in time as victims,” he declared. “They are Chibok women – scholars, mothers, sisters, leaders. They are thriving and charting their own paths.”

Frazier reminded the audience that the 2014 kidnapping was not just an act of terror against individuals but a strike against education itself.

“That night, they didn’t just attack a school—they attacked the light of knowledge. But a decade later, that light burns brighter than ever.”

The ceremony also paid tribute to longtime supporters of the girls’ journey, including the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, Stephen Basari, and Aisha Bugu of the Yulish Bugu Foundation.

Closing on a note of inspiration, Frazier added:

“Life has no rearview mirror. The future belongs to you. And we remain committed to ensuring that every survivor is not just safe, but thriving
