NiMet Warns of Meningitis, Heat-Related Illness Risks Across 12 Nigerian States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has raised an alert over a potential surge in meningitis, heat-related illness risks, and heat exhaustion across 12 states in Nigeria.

The states identified as high-risk include Niger State, Kebbi State, Sokoto State, Zamfara State, Katsina State, Kano State, Yobe State, Jigawa State, Bauchi State, Gombe State, Borno State, and Adamawa State.

According to the agency, heat index forecasts indicate dangerously high temperatures spanning the northern, central, and southern parts of the country. In the north, temperatures are expected to climb between 40°C and 45°C, while central regions may experience 35°C to 38°C. Southern areas are projected to record temperatures ranging from 33°C to 35°C.

NiMet further explained that the combination of extreme heat and the presence of fine dust particles, particularly across parts of the north, heightens the likelihood of heat-related illnesses as well as possible outbreaks of meningitis.

Residents in the affected areas have been advised to steer clear of crowded and poorly ventilated environments, maintain good airflow in living spaces, especially during the night, wear loose and breathable clothing, stay well hydrated, and reduce time spent under direct sunlight.
