This legislation was passed by the German parliament which is effective from today 1st April 2024.

As of Monday, adults over the age of 18 are now legally allowed to possess up to 25 grams of dried cannabis and cultivate a maximum of three marijuana plants at home.

This initiative has placed Germany alongside Malta and Luxembourg one of the European countries with the most lenient cannabis laws.

The law has also garnered both local and international condemnation as well as well as celebrations.

For instance, criticism from police, who fear it will be difficult to enforce. “From April 1, our colleagues will find themselves in situations of conflict with citizens, as uncertainty reigns on both sides,” said Alexander Poitz, vice-president of the GdP police union.

Even Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, a doctor, has said that cannabis consumption can be “dangerous”, especially for young people.

“We can finally show ourselves, we don’t have to hide any more,” Henry Plottke, a member of the German Hemp Association (DHV), told dpa at the Berlin gathering.

Will this new law put Germany 🇩🇪 at a risk of becoming drug abuse state or perfect it plan for moral use of the drug?
