Jamilu Gwamna Emerges APC Consensus Governorship Candidate in Gombe

Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Gombe State.

The decision was reached on Sunday at an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting presided over by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

Daily Trust reports 11 politicians had earlier indicated their interest to contest for the governorship seat on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

According to a list released by the state secretariat of the APC, the aspirants that had indicated interest are, Dr Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, Dr Aminu Yuguda, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, Senator Saidu Alkali, Alhaji Umaru Kwairanga (Sarkin Fulani), Engr. Abubakar Bappah, Hon. Muhammad Gambo Magaji, Abubakar Sadiq Shu’aibu, Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Usman Bello Kumo, immediate past Minister of Transportation, Engr. Aliyu Muhammad (Combat).

However, a businessman cum politician, Arch. Yunusa Yakubu, withdrew from the contest last Thursday.

Senator Alkali, Prof. Pantami and Engr. Aliyu Muhammad boycotted the stakeholders’ meetings held Saturday night and early Sunday evening.

The meeting also ratified consensus candidates for the state’s three senatorial districts, six House of Representatives seats and 24 state House of Assembly constituencies.

The party also picked Mohammed Jarman Deba for the Gombe Central Senatorial District, a seat currently occupied by Senator Muhammad Danjuma Goje.

For the Gombe North Senatorial seat, the party picked Governor Yahaya to contest against Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

For the Gombe South Senatorial District, Joseph Jerry Damara was picked as the party’s consensus candidate, bypassing the serving senator, Antony Siyako Yaro, who recently defected to the APC.

For the six House of Representatives seat, Usman Bello Kumo was picked for Akko Federal Constituency, Ali Isa JC, Balanga/Billiri Federal Constituency, for the Dukku Federal Constituency, Jamilu Shabewa was picked against a serving member, Abdullahi El-Rasheed.

While Sadam Bello Saleh was picked for the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency; Fatima Binta Bello for the Kaltungo/Shongom Federal Constituency and for the Yamaltu/Deba Federal Constituency, a serving member, Inuwa Garba, who recently defected to the APC, was picked as the anointed candidate.

Daily Trust had reported that Governor Yahaya had directed that only one form for the governorship, three and six forms for the Senate and House of Representatives, respectively, should be purchased in line with the consensus agreement, where all the aspirants pledged to rally behind whoever emerged through the consensus process.

Governor Fintiri Pardons Nine Inmates, Commutes Death Sentence to Mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary In commemoration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebration, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has granted pardons to nine inmates serving various terms in correctional facilities across the state. A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, said the Governor ordered the immediate release of the pardoned inmates, noting that all legal formalities had been concluded with the Nigerian Correctional Service. “The Governor acted on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy and in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 212(1)(d) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” the statement said. According to the statement, those granted pardon and discharged include Abubakar Dajo, who was serving at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Jos; Zabadi Ayuba and Salvation Nyamso, both serving at the Numan Custodial Centre. Others are Amir Idris, Mohammed Saidu, Yaro Sambo, Buhari Salisu, Urube Samuel and Bamaiyi Amos, who were discharged from the Jimeta, Ganye, Guyuk, Yola Old and Kojoli Custodial Centres, respectively. In addition to the pardons, Governor Fintiri approved the commutation of the death sentence imposed on one inmate, Saidu Abdullahi of the Yola Old Custodial Centre, to life imprisonment. The Governor’s action, the statement noted, was in the spirit of the Independence anniversary and reflects the government’s commitment to mercy, justice and the rehabilitation of offenders. The pardons and commutation take immediate effect, the statement added.
