Adamawa State Kicks Off 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

The Adamawa State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in partnership with the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Sub-Sector Working Group and the Office of the First Lady, has officially launched the 16 Days of Activism against GBV at Government House Yola, which will run from today, November 25, through December 10, 2024.

In a press briefing marking the event, the First Lady of Adamawa State, Her Excellency Hajiya Lami Umar Fintiri, was represented by Mrs. Neido Geoffrey Kufulto, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development. Mrs. Kufulto opened the event by stressing the importance of addressing GBV as a widespread issue that stems from gender inequalities, abuse of power, and harmful social norms.

She emphasized that GBV is not just an individual act of violence but a systemic issue rooted in discrimination and cultural practices.

The commissioner reiterated the state government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on GBV, she also commend the efforts of His Excellency Rt Hon Ahmadu Fintiri and The Firstlady Hajiya Lami Fintiri to empower vulnerable PLwDs, children and vulnerable women, including increasing their representation in leadership roles at local government levels. She also called for collaboration from traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, and the media to strengthen efforts in fighting GBV.

Representing the UNHCR, Mr. Triumph Cosmos spoke about the importance of the 16 Days of Activism campaign and the collective efforts of all partners working to end GBV. He pointed the need for continued collaboration to bring about lasting change.

Mr. Mustapha, representing the International Human Rights Commission, praised the Adamawa state government for its openness to NGOs, allowing them to play a role in securing citizens’ welfare and tackling GBV.

Grace Mamza, from the National Human Rights Commission, also echoed the need for a united front in the fight against GBV, stating that no single organization can solve the issue on its own.

Mrs. Rebecca Kwabe, representing the National Council for Women Society, spoke on the importance of cultural values, urging a return to the principles of love, unity, and respect for human dignity as the foundation for eradicating GBV.

The event ended with remarks from Zainab Adamu Umar, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs, who thanked all stakeholders for their continued efforts in combating GBV and urged everyone to remain committed to the cause.

The 16 Days of Activism is part of a global movement aimed at raising awareness and advocating for an end to gender-based violence. The event was attended by NGOs, government bodies, religious groups as well as other key stakeholders.
