Twin Fire Incidents Ravage Song and Girei, Millions in Property Lost; No Casualties Recorded

A devastating fire outbreak at the Song Petrol Station on Thursday night, February 15, 2026, resulted in the destruction of properties worth millions of Naira. The incident, which occurred in the Song Metropolis, marks another in a series of fire disasters plaguing Adamawa State during the current dry season.
According to eyewitness accounts, the inferno, which started late in the night, rapidly engulfed parts of the fuel station and an adjacent furniture showroom owned by a businessman, Mr. Tumba Hero. The intense blaze triggered panic in the vicinity, with fears of a possible explosion.
However, through the swift and combined efforts of spirited individuals from the community alongside local responders, the fire was successfully contained and extinguished, preventing any loss of life—a development hailed as miraculous by residents.
In a related incident on the same day, a rented residential building in the Vunoklang area of Girei Local Government Area was also gutted by fire, leading to significant property destruction for the occupants. The dual incidents have heightened concerns over fire safety in the state.
While the exact causes of both disasters remain sketchy and under investigation, preliminary discussions among residents point to possible negligence as a chief contributing factor, especially given the heightened risks associated with the dry, Harmattan season.
In response to the Song disaster, the Chairman of Song Local Government, Hon. Idris Yahaya, paid a sympathy visit to the fire-ravaged site on Friday. The visit aimed to ascertain the level of damage firsthand at both the fuel station and Mr. Hero’s furniture showroom.
Speaking at the scene, Chairman Yahaya expressed his profound sympathy to the affected business owners. He immediately directed them to liaise with the Director of Works and Housing for the council, Engineer Alkasum Abdullahi, to facilitate necessary assistance from the local government.
“This is a trying moment for our community and the affected families. We share in your grief and losses,” Hon. Yahaya stated. “Our administration is committed to providing all possible support to help you recover from this devastating event.”
Following his assessment, the chairman led prayers, asking Almighty God to grant the victims comfort and solace.
The back-to-back fires have sparked renewed calls from the public for increased vigilance, proper safety protocols at business premises, and public sensitization on fire prevention measures, particularly during the state’s perilous dry season.
