Adamawa Assembly Moves to Curb Fatal Crashes on Yola-MAU-Girei Road

Following a spate of deadly accidents that claimed six lives, including students of Modibbo Adama University (MAU), the Adamawa State House of Assembly has adopted urgent resolutions to address the alarming rate of crashes along the Yola-MAU-Girei road.

At Monday’s plenary presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley, the Assembly mandated its Standing Committee on Transport to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the root causes of the frequent accidents, with findings due within two weeks.

The committee is directed to engage key stakeholders including the Ministry of Transport, FRSC, Nigeria Police, state traffic authorities, NDLEA, and Vehicle Inspection Officers to develop both immediate and long-term solutions.

Proposed measures include enhanced traffic enforcement, speed monitoring, vehicle inspections, personnel deployment, road signs installation, speed breakers, and public enlightenment campaigns.

The motion, sponsored by Toungo Constituency representative Hon. Calvin Kefas, cited reckless driving, speeding, dangerous overtaking, and drug/alcohol use as contributing factors.

Contributing lawmakers, including Majority Leader Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno and Deputy Speaker Hon. Muhammed Buba Jidjiwa, advocated for road dualization and immediate interventions.

The Assembly sympathized with families of the six victims who perished in the September 4, 2026 accident.
