ASUU Yola Zone Threatens Strike Over Delay in Implementing 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yola Zone, has called on state governments to immediately implement the provisions of the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and the union, warning that continued delays could trigger industrial action.

The warning was issued during a press briefing held in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, where the union expressed frustration over what it described as persistent failure by authorities to fulfill commitments made to university lecturers.

Speaking on behalf of the zone, ASUU Yola Coordinator, Comrade Dani Mamman, said public universities under the zone are facing growing challenges due to the refusal of some state governments to implement key aspects of the agreement.

According to him, lecturers in several state-owned universities are yet to receive the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Professional Allowance, and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA). The affected institutions include Adamawa State University, Mubi; Borno State University; Taraba State University, Jalingo; and Yobe State University, Damaturu.

Mamman said agreements reached through negotiations should be treated as binding commitments rather than ignored, adding that the prolonged delay undermines collective bargaining and threatens the stability of Nigeria’s public university system.

He argued that lecturers across the affected institutions perform the same academic responsibilities—including teaching, research, student supervision, curriculum development, community service, examinations, and administrative duties—yet continue to be denied benefits due to them.

The union described the situation as unfair and demoralizing, warning that it has created tension within the affected universities.

ASUU further demanded the immediate implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement, payment of all outstanding arrears linked to the unpaid allowances, and full respect for collective bargaining agreements as a foundation for industrial harmony.

The union warned that if the outstanding issues are not addressed promptly, it may have no option but to embark on industrial action.

ASUU noted that it has repeatedly engaged the authorities on the matter in the past. While acknowledging that a few aspects of the agreement have been implemented, the union maintained that the major issues affecting its members remain unresolved.
