Northern Governor Approves N1.5bn for Mass Wedding of 3,000 couples 

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved N1.5 billion to fund a planned mass wedding programme in the state. The initiative aims to support 3,000 intending couples by providing essential items and financial assistance.

Prospective participants are required to undergo comprehensive medical screenings, including tests for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype compatibility, drug use, and other health conditions. Authorities have emphasized that only applicants who pass these medical examinations will qualify for the programme.

Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, disclosed that the approved funds will cover the purchase of furniture, food items, dowry, and clothing materials for the couples. Additionally, each bride will receive N100,000 as start-up capital under the scheme.

Speaking to newsmen while discussing preparations ahead of the event, Sheikh Daurawa expressed gratitude to Governor Yusuf for initiating the programme and noted that the governor is expected to announce the official date for the mass wedding soon.

Daurawa further explained that out of the 5,000 applicants, 3,000 will be selected based on the results of the ongoing medical screening exercise. The Hisbah Board, in partnership with the State Ministry of Health, has already commenced the medical evaluations to assess the health status of the prospective couples.

This initiative reflects Kano State’s commitment to promoting marriage and social stability, with significant state investment to support couples in need. The Hisbah Board stresses the importance of marital commitment and encourages couples to resolve conflicts amicably before considering divorce.

Following the announcement of the mass wedding programme for 2,000 couples, some married men have appealed to be included, arguing that the scheme would help offset the high costs of polygamous marriages and regularize relationships, thereby preventing immorality.

The Hisbah Board continues to implement the government-directed plan, which incorporates medical screening as a key measure to promote morality and reduce social vices across the state.
