Super Eagles Soar: Nigeria Retain Unity Cup Crown with Commanding Victory Over Jamaica

Nigeria retained the Afro-Caribbean Football Tournament (The Unity Cup) crown with a surefooted display that flummoxed Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz at The Valley on Saturday, delivering a masterclass in clinical counter-attacking football.

USA-based midfielder Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi netted a brace to cap a brilliant mini-tournament for himself, with stand-in captain Terem Moffi scoring in-between to ensure despair for the Reggae Boyz’s teeming crowd in south-east London.

The Super Eagles silenced the majority of the 12,000-strong attendance within four minutes. Abdullahi was quickest to the ball as goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke punched following a long throw-in from the left by Kenneth Igboke, slotting home from close range to stun the Jamaican supporters.

Nigeria’s early advantage—just as happened against Zimbabwe in the semi-final four days earlier—spurred them to a commanding display that left the Reggae Boyz chasing shadows for large swathes of the encounter.

Coach Eric Chelle made only one change to the team that upended Zimbabwe’s Warriors, bringing in Rafiu Durosinmi to start in place of Philip Otele. But the three-time African champions kept their telepathy and ran the park with flair and discipline.

In the eighth minute, goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was called to action for the first time, but he saved easily as Brown headed the ball after a cross by Kaheim Dixon.

Nigeria came close to increasing the tally in the 35th minute, but Durosinmi’s shot was well-read by Boyce-Clarke as the Eagles broke on the counter.

After the interval, Durosinmi’s header from a Femi Azeez free-kick flew over the sticks. But a minute later, the Eagles were celebrating as Moffi headed a pin-point Azeez cross beyond the flailing arms of Boyce-Clarke to double Nigeria’s advantage.

Boyce-Clarke saved smartly from another Azeez free-kick on the edge of the box, but Nigeria refused to slow down. With one minute of added time on the clock, substitute Philip Otele snatched the ball midway into Jamaica’s half and found Abdullahi, whose angled shot proved too much for the Jamaican shot-stopper, sealing a handsome 3-0 win for the Super Eagles.

Next up for the Eagles is a friendly against Poland’s senior men national team at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on Wednesday, 3rd June.
