Popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has reportedly died in Lagos after a prolonged battle with cancer, throwing Nigeria’s entertainment industry and his millions of fans across the world into mourning.

The sad development was announced on Tuesday evening by talent manager and filmmaker Sam Olatunji, who confirmed the actor’s death.

“Breaking News:  Popular Nigeria Actor “ALEX EKUBO”is Dead!!!!!!” he stated on Facebook.

“Prayers up to the EKUBO family,” he said in another post.

A source familiar with the incident also confirmed the news to SaharaReporters, stating that the actor died after a battle with cancer.

Ekubo, known for his charming personality, comic delivery and versatility on screen, had been noticeably absent from the public space for months, stirring concerns among fans and colleagues in the entertainment industry.

His last social media activity was reportedly in 2024, a silence that had triggered widespread speculation about his whereabouts and wellbeing.

Many followers had repeatedly questioned why the actor suddenly disappeared from movies, public events and online engagements.

Born and raised in Nigeria, Ekubo rose to fame through his roles in several blockbuster Nollywood productions, becoming one of the most recognisable faces in the African film industry.

Colleagues and fans have since flooded social media with emotional tributes, describing him as a kind-hearted, jovial and exceptionally talented actor whose contributions helped shape modern Nollywood.

His death has left many in shock, especially fans who had hoped to see him make a return to the screen after his long absence.

As of the time of filing this report, the family had yet to release an official statement regarding burial arrangements.

Governor Fintiri Pardons Nine Inmates, Commutes Death Sentence to Mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary In commemoration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebration, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has granted pardons to nine inmates serving various terms in correctional facilities across the state. A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, said the Governor ordered the immediate release of the pardoned inmates, noting that all legal formalities had been concluded with the Nigerian Correctional Service. “The Governor acted on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy and in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 212(1)(d) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” the statement said. According to the statement, those granted pardon and discharged include Abubakar Dajo, who was serving at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Jos; Zabadi Ayuba and Salvation Nyamso, both serving at the Numan Custodial Centre. Others are Amir Idris, Mohammed Saidu, Yaro Sambo, Buhari Salisu, Urube Samuel and Bamaiyi Amos, who were discharged from the Jimeta, Ganye, Guyuk, Yola Old and Kojoli Custodial Centres, respectively. In addition to the pardons, Governor Fintiri approved the commutation of the death sentence imposed on one inmate, Saidu Abdullahi of the Yola Old Custodial Centre, to life imprisonment. The Governor’s action, the statement noted, was in the spirit of the Independence anniversary and reflects the government’s commitment to mercy, justice and the rehabilitation of offenders. The pardons and commutation take immediate effect, the statement added.
