NLC President Not Arrested But Protected From Attack – Police

The Imo State Police Command has clarified the situation regarding the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, stating that he was not arrested, but rather protected from a potential mob attack.

In an official statement released by the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Okoye Henry, on November 1, the Police emphasized, “The Imo State Police Command wishes to clarify some sketchy reports alleging the arrest of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Owerri.

“It is important to note that the NLC President was in Owerri as part of the Congress’s efforts to mobilize workers for a major protest rally in the state. During the planning, suggestions were made to temporarily halt some essential facilities, notably the airport. This led to resistance from some workers and individuals, resulting in skirmishes and heated arguments, culminating in an attack on the President by a mob.

“In response to this situation, the Imo Police Command promptly dispatched officers to the scene. The Officer in Charge exercised operational discretion by taking the NLC President into protective custody at the State Command Headquarters, ensuring his safety and preventing potential harm during the ensuing scuffle.

“The Commissioner of Police subsequently directed that he be taken to the Police Medical Services, Owerri, for necessary medical attention following the attack. He has been provided with adequate security arrangements to proceed with his other legitimate engagements for the day.”

The statement also noted that a court order had prohibited the NLC from conducting their planned protest in Owerri.

“It is, however, essential to highlight the existence of a court injunction from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, held in Owerri with Suit No. NICN/OW/41/2023 dated 27th October, 2023, which bars the NLC from conducting the intended protest rally in Owerri.”

State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Barde, further urged all concerned parties to adhere to the court’s directives to avoid jeopardizing current security measures in Owerri and other parts of Imo State, especially in light of the upcoming election process scheduled for November 11.
