Adamawa Government, Police Launch “Operation Clear the Road” to Decongest Ngurore-Numan Highway

The Adamawa State Government, in a decisive partnership with the Nigeria Police Force, has commenced a major clampdown on traders and motorists disrupting free movement along the notoriously congested Ngurore-Numan and Mayo-Belwa highways.

The joint security operation, tagged “Operation Clear the Road,” aims to decongest the vital arterial road, restore sanity, and ensure the free flow of traffic for all road users. For years, the highway has been in the news as burgeoning economic activities gradually took over most of its stretches, transforming it into an informal market and motor park.

This encroachment has led to persistent traffic gridlock and preventable accidents, as trucks, commuter vehicles, traders, and passengers engage in a daily struggle for space. Many have wondered why business activities persistently spill onto the road despite the existence of a designated market.

Leading the operation, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Ibrahim Kambra, stated that the exercise became imperative due to the prevailing lawlessness around the Ngurore market area, which has severely disrupted vehicular movement.

“Machineries have been put in place to ensure the sustainability of this operation,” ACP Kambra said. He also expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance and success recorded so far, urging continued public cooperation.

Echoing the police position, the Chairman of Yola South Local Government Area, Salihu Usman Malkohi, explained that the primary goal is to restore order to the area and reduce the unnecessary accidents caused by road blockages.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to continuing the operation and urged residents to support the urban renewal drive of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s administration.

Chairman Malkohi also revealed a long-term solution, stating, “A new site of about 4.5 hectares has already been proposed as a dedicated grains market and motor park to permanently address this issue.”

The clearance exercise has received applause from some business operators in the area, who acknowledge its broader benefits. They noted that while it may cause temporary dislocation, it promises greater safety, smoother transportation, and a more organized business environment for traders, motorists, and commuters in the long run.

Authorities have warned that the operation will be sustained to prevent a return of the chaotic status quo, signalling a new phase in the effort to reclaim public infrastructure and ensure safety on Adamawa’s key highways.
