Scabies Outbreak Spreads Across Guyuk LGA, Infects Over 150 Residents

An outbreak of scabies has hit Guyuk Local Government Area of Adamawa State, leaving more than 150 residents infected and sparking concern among local communities.

The contagious skin infection, which causes severe itching and rashes, has spread across six wards in the Nungura region — home to the Lunguda people. Affected areas include Dukul, Bobini, Lokoro, Guyuk, Banjiram, and Purokayo.

Confirming the development, Abdul Garba Sheji, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO) for Guyuk, told our correspondent that the outbreak was first detected earlier this month and continues to spread rapidly.

“We have sent an inventory of the affected persons to the Primary Health Care Development Agency in Yola for immediate intervention,” Sheji said.

Health officials have since launched community sensitization campaigns to educate residents on prevention and control measures, emphasizing hygiene and early treatment.

Scabies, caused by the human itch mite, spreads easily through close skin contact or by sharing infested items such as clothing, towels, and bedding.

The Executive Secretary for Health in Guyuk LGA, Mrs. Eriya Daniel, confirmed the situation and appealed for swift support from both government and humanitarian organizations to curb the spread.

Environmental experts suggest the outbreak may be linked to the aftermath of recent flooding, which left several communities vulnerable to disease outbreaks.

Meanwhile, Adamawa State Commissioner for Health, Chief Felix Tangwami, told reporters he had not yet been briefed on the situation.

Residents of Guyuk are calling for urgent medical supplies and state intervention to prevent the situation from escalating further.
