Akpabio Returns to Nigeria, Denies Rumours of Ill-Health

Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on Monday morning returned to Nigeria after a brief vacation in London, United Kingdom, putting to rest widespread speculation about his health.

Rumours had circulated in recent weeks that the Senate President was critically ill and receiving treatment abroad. However, his arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, around 4:00 a.m., dismissed the claims. He was warmly received at the Presidential Wing by senators, aides, and supporters.

Akpabio had earlier participated in the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, held between July 29 and 31, before proceeding to London for a short break.

Addressing journalists on his return, Akpabio assured Nigerians of “robust legislative engagements” when the National Assembly resumes plenary. He also defended Nigeria’s strong delegation at the International Parliamentary Union in Geneva, stressing that citizens would see “greater dividends of democratic governance and closer collaboration with the executive and judiciary.”

His return comes just a week after former Ogun State Governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel, and Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, separately debunked reports of his alleged hospitalisation in London.

On the health rumours, the Senate President said jokingly: “If you listen to social media, you will go to war.”
