Taraba Lawmaker Resigns as member for Commissioner Role, Here’s Why
In a political development that surprised many in Taraba State, Hon. Mike Dio Jen, the Member representing Karim-Lamido 1 Constituency at the Taraba State House of Assembly, has officially resigned from his legislative seat to take up a new role in Governor Agbu Kefas’s executive cabinet.
Jen’s resignation came shortly after the Governor approved his appointment as Commissioner for the Ministry of Tertiary Institutions, as announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Gibson Kataps, on April 15, 2025.
In his reaction, Jen described the decision as both emotional and dutiful, explaining that his move to the executive arm of government was in strict obedience to Governor Kefas, whom he called his “political boss.”
“My appointment as commissioner to head the Ministry for Tertiary Institutions is saddled with sadness and joy, especially in my Constituency,” Jen said.
He emphasized his loyalty to the governor, saying he would have gladly accepted even a more grassroots appointment if Kefas had asked.
“Governor Dr Agbu Kefas is my boss, whatever he says I should do, I will do it. Even if he tells me to go and help him as Councilor representing my Ward, I will go. I am not a disobedient child.”
The former lawmaker, who previously served as Provost of the College of Education, Zing, for ten years, said his experience in the education sector prepared him for the new task. He urged his constituents to see his resignation as a sacrifice for the growth of the state rather than a personal gain.
“It is a state assignment and if I want the state to grow, I must do it. Forget about personal interest.”
Jen also disclosed that his exit from the House of Assembly would prompt a by-election to fill his now-vacant seat, ensuring his constituency remains represented.
As the state awaits his official swearing-in, conversations continue around the implications of this reshuffle and the upcoming by-election in Karim-Lamido 1
