Adamawa business owners complain of hike and inconsistency in food commodities price

A real-time insight into the prices of staple food such as beans, rice, maize, sweet potatoes and cereals has revealed an inconsistency and fluctuation in the price of the commodities at the Jimeta Ultra Modern market.

Findings also showed a high margin in prices of food items lost their market value is due to factors associated with the depreciation of the naira, production deficit, raise in price of petrol, trade sanctions and too many middle men in the supply chain.

The situation at the marker on Wednesday showed a bag of potatoes goes for 13-15 thausand naira.

Mohammed Ishaku and Haruna Bello dealers in variety of rice revealed a high fluctuation in the price of the product ranging from 1400 naira to 1800 naira per measure depending on the quality of the product.

Awal Mato who sales assorted pasta also attested to the consistent fluctuation in the price of the prices of pasta and noddles, which he attributes to the consistent depreciation of the naira against the Dollar.

Other reports also showed that a packet of Maggi now goes for 1100 naira, a measure of Gari is 900 naira against 700 naira previously while a litre of vegetable oil is 1400 naira.

Mary Pius who sales maize flour lamented over the hike in the price of maize which now goes for 70 thausand naira per bag.

Musa Yaro chairman Jimeta Ultra Modern market and Abubakar Ali were very displeased with the high market value of food stuff despite being an essential of life.

Governor Fintiri Pardons Nine Inmates, Commutes Death Sentence to Mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary In commemoration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebration, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has granted pardons to nine inmates serving various terms in correctional facilities across the state. A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, said the Governor ordered the immediate release of the pardoned inmates, noting that all legal formalities had been concluded with the Nigerian Correctional Service. “The Governor acted on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy and in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 212(1)(d) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” the statement said. According to the statement, those granted pardon and discharged include Abubakar Dajo, who was serving at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Jos; Zabadi Ayuba and Salvation Nyamso, both serving at the Numan Custodial Centre. Others are Amir Idris, Mohammed Saidu, Yaro Sambo, Buhari Salisu, Urube Samuel and Bamaiyi Amos, who were discharged from the Jimeta, Ganye, Guyuk, Yola Old and Kojoli Custodial Centres, respectively. In addition to the pardons, Governor Fintiri approved the commutation of the death sentence imposed on one inmate, Saidu Abdullahi of the Yola Old Custodial Centre, to life imprisonment. The Governor’s action, the statement noted, was in the spirit of the Independence anniversary and reflects the government’s commitment to mercy, justice and the rehabilitation of offenders. The pardons and commutation take immediate effect, the statement added.
