Adamawa Warriors Crowned Champions of North East Zonal 4×4 Handball Championship

Adamawa Warriors Handball Club have emerged champions of the North East Zonal 4×4 Handball Championship tagged Yankari 2026, held in Yankari, Bauchi State, from 31 July to 3 August 2026.

The Adamawa Warriors recorded an impressive run throughout the competition. They opened their campaign with a 20–13 victory over Yobe State, before defeating hosts Bauchi State 13–9. In the grand finale on 3 August, Adamawa produced a commanding 22–11 victory over Borno State to seal the championship and establish themselves as the No. 1 team in the North East Zone.

The team’s participation and success were made possible through the support and sponsorship of the Adamawa State Government, the Adamawa State Sports Council, Yola, and the Chairman of Numan Local Government Area, Arch. Nzamgopwa Zidon.

Speaking during the formal presentation of the championship trophy, the Acting Director of Sports, Mr. Yoila Yakubu, commended the players and officials for their outstanding performance and for making Adamawa State proud at the zonal level.

He congratulated the team for emerging as No. 1 in the North East, describing the achievement as a testament to the players’ dedication, discipline, teamwork and commitment to excellence.

Mr. Yakubu further expressed appreciation to His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Executive Governor of Adamawa State, for his unwavering support towards sports development in the state, particularly his commitment to grassroots sports development and beyond.

He also appreciated the Chairman of Numan Local Government Area, Arch. Nzamgopwa Zidon, for his valuable support and contribution towards the team’s participation and success in the championship.

The Acting Director emphasized the importance of sustained support from the government, sports administrators and other stakeholders in discovering, nurturing and promoting sporting talents across Adamawa State.

The victory of the Adamawa Warriors Handball Club is a remarkable achievement for the state and another indication of the growing strength and potential of handball in Adamawa.

Governor Fintiri Pardons Nine Inmates, Commutes Death Sentence to Mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary In commemoration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebration, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has granted pardons to nine inmates serving various terms in correctional facilities across the state. A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, said the Governor ordered the immediate release of the pardoned inmates, noting that all legal formalities had been concluded with the Nigerian Correctional Service. “The Governor acted on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy and in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 212(1)(d) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” the statement said. According to the statement, those granted pardon and discharged include Abubakar Dajo, who was serving at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Jos; Zabadi Ayuba and Salvation Nyamso, both serving at the Numan Custodial Centre. Others are Amir Idris, Mohammed Saidu, Yaro Sambo, Buhari Salisu, Urube Samuel and Bamaiyi Amos, who were discharged from the Jimeta, Ganye, Guyuk, Yola Old and Kojoli Custodial Centres, respectively. In addition to the pardons, Governor Fintiri approved the commutation of the death sentence imposed on one inmate, Saidu Abdullahi of the Yola Old Custodial Centre, to life imprisonment. The Governor’s action, the statement noted, was in the spirit of the Independence anniversary and reflects the government’s commitment to mercy, justice and the rehabilitation of offenders. The pardons and commutation take immediate effect, the statement added.
