Fintiri Launches Hybrid Solar Mini Grid Projects to Boost Power Supply in Michika, Madagali, Bazza

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has officially inaugurated the construction of hybrid solar mini grid projects for the communities of Michika, Bazza, and Madagali, marking a significant step toward expanding access to reliable electricity and accelerating economic recovery in the state’s northern region.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony held in Michika on Tuesday, Governor Fintiri said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to addressing energy challenges through sustainable and renewable power solutions, particularly in communities that suffered extensive destruction during years of insurgency.

The governor noted that when his administration came into office in 2019, many communities in Michika and Madagali Local Government Areas were still struggling with damaged infrastructure, including electricity facilities destroyed by insurgent activities.

According to him, although the state government invested resources to reconnect the area to the national grid through the Damboa transmission line, recurring attacks on electricity infrastructure highlighted the need for a more dependable and resilient energy system.

Fintiri explained that the solar mini grid projects emerged from strategic engagements with investors during the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) Investor Roundtable held in 2025, where Adamawa attracted private sector interest in renewable energy development.

He disclosed that the REA has approved nearly 40 mini grid projects across the state, with the current phase consisting of a 3.2-megawatt hybrid solar mini grid for Michika, a 665-kilowatt facility for Bazza, and a 1.8-megawatt hybrid solar mini grid for Madagali. The projects will be executed by renewable energy company A4&T.

The governor further revealed that additional solar mini grid projects are planned for Shuwa, Gulak, and surrounding communities through Startimes Nigeria Limited.

Describing the technology behind the projects, Fintiri said the hybrid system combines solar power generation, battery storage, and backup generators to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the day and night.

To improve power distribution, he directed the Ministry of Works and Energy Development to carry out an immediate technical assessment of the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) network stretching from Uba to Madagali to identify areas requiring rehabilitation and upgrades.

Governor Fintiri expressed optimism that stable electricity would create new economic opportunities by supporting agro-processing businesses, welding and fabrication workshops, ICT centres, small-scale manufacturing, and other enterprises capable of generating employment and improving livelihoods.

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for implementing policies that encourage private investment in the electricity sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda, while acknowledging the Rural Electrification Agency for promoting renewable energy projects across Nigeria.

The governor praised A4&T for its commitment to investing approximately ₦80 billion in renewable energy infrastructure within Adamawa State, describing the company as an important partner in the state’s development agenda.

He assured investors of continued government support through enabling policies, improved security, and collaboration with host communities to ensure the successful execution and long-term sustainability of the projects.

Governor Fintiri called on residents of Michika, Bazza, and Madagali to take ownership of the facilities by protecting them from vandalism, stressing that the projects would serve as critical drivers of economic growth and improved living standards.
