VeryDarkMan Speaks Out After EFCC Detention: “I Use Debt for Charity”

Outspoken social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has finally broken his silence following his arrest and five-day detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

VDM was apprehended on May 2 while at a bank in Abuja and released on May 7, according to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju. The arrest stirred public outrage, with supporters and celebrities taking to the streets and social media to demand his release.

In a video shared online, the activist appeared alongside his lawyer to address the situation, rejecting the EFCC’s claims of suspected money laundering. He maintained that the accusations were groundless, adding humorously that his financial struggles hardly qualify him for such a charge.

“How can they accuse someone with no money of laundering money?” he quipped. “I’ve done many charitable acts, and they think I’m rich. They don’t understand that I go into debt to help people.”

His remarks add a new layer to the public narrative, suggesting that his philanthropic efforts, often mistaken for signs of wealth, have been sustained by personal sacrifice rather than hidden fortune.

VDM’s ordeal with the EFCC sparked widespread criticism and amplified ongoing conversations about the rights of activists and the use of law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.
