Three Students Kidnapped from Benue University, Police Begin Investigation

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the kidnapping of three students from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JoSTUM). The incident occurred on Tuesday night, just hours after the university unveiled a new uniform for its internal security personnel in a ceremony led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Itodo.

According to the police spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, initial reports suggested two victims were taken, but the university later confirmed that three students were abducted. She assured the public that investigations were ongoing and that efforts were underway to rescue the victims.

Eyewitness Account

A student of the university, Nguemo, who witnessed the attack, narrated that a group of students was heading to class when seven armed men suddenly appeared and seized three female students, while others managed to escape.

The university’s management, in a circular signed by the Registrar, Dr. John David, confirmed that the abduction took place around 8:00 p.m. near Zamfara Hostel and Ring Road in the North Core of the campus.

Dr. David stated that the state government and security agencies had been notified and that following consultations with relevant stakeholders, the university reached key resolutions to enhance security.

Security Measures and Mid-Semester Break

To address the security situation, the university announced the indefinite postponement of an inaugural lecture scheduled for Wednesday. Additionally, the management declared a one-week mid-semester break, urging all students to vacate their hostels by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday to ensure their safety.

“The management urges all staff, students, and the general public to remain calm, as security agencies are working tirelessly to secure the release of the abducted students,” the statement read.

HURIWA Demands Immediate Action

Reacting to the incident, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) strongly condemned the abduction, stating that such acts of violence threaten educational institutions and instill fear among students and parents.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, called on security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and take decisive action to curb the rising wave of insecurity. He urged the Benue State Government to introduce strict anti-kidnapping laws, including capital punishment, to deter criminal elements.

“While this may seem drastic, it could serve as a strong deterrent against kidnappers. The government must enforce stringent laws to affirm its commitment to protecting citizens. Life is sacred and must be defended at all costs,” Onwubiko emphasized.

The police have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safe return of the abducted students while investigations continue.
