Nigerian Music legend Onyeka, dies after performance

Nigerian music legend Onyeka Onwenu, known as the “Elegant Stallion,” has passed away at the age of 72. Onwenu reportedly collapsed after performing at the 80th birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, on Tuesday.

Witnesses said she was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A source, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed sorrow, saying, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday tonight. After her performance, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital but unfortunately did not survive.”

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Onwenu started her music career in the 1980s, with her debut album, “For the Love of You,” released in 1981. She became well-known for numerous albums and singles, including the popular song “One Love.” Onwenu also made a mark in Nollywood, acting in several films and earning numerous awards for her contributions to music and film.

Beyond her entertainment career, Onwenu was active in politics. In 2013, she was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and later became Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016. In 2011, she was honored with the National Honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
