Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82 in London

Nigeria mourns the loss of one of its most iconic figures, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd.), GCFR, who passed away on Sunday, 13 July 2025, at a clinic in London, United Kingdom, at the age of 82.uhammadu Buhari

The announcement was made by presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu, who said in a brief statement:

“The family has announced the passing of the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, this afternoon, in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

Born on 17 December 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari first emerged on Nigeria’s national stage as a disciplined and upright military officer. He served as Head of State from 1983 to 1985 after a military coup. Decades later, he returned to public office through democratic means, becoming the President of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023—the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to defeat an incumbent.
