First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Reacts to Viral Nursing Students’ Song

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged the management of Delta State College of Nursing Services, Agbor, to handle the recent controversy surrounding a group of student nurses with fairness and understanding.

The issue arose after a video went viral on social media, capturing some nursing students playfully altering the lyrics of a welcome song during the First Lady’s visit. In response, the institution reportedly issued a query to the student who posted the video online.

Busola Kukoyi, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the First Lady, released a statement on Friday, March 28, emphasizing the need for balance in addressing the matter. According to Kukoyi, while institutions have the right to maintain discipline, it is also essential to acknowledge that students often express themselves in a lighthearted manner, especially in moments of excitement.

The incident took place on March 25 during the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where the First Lady distributed 10,000 professional kits (Crocs and scrubs) to midwives in the South-South region. As part of the event, the Master of Ceremony led the students in a welcome song, singing, “Na our mama be this o, we no get any other mama,” expecting the students to echo the chant. However, instead of the expected response, the students humorously replied, “Na your (the MC’s) mama be this oo!”

This unexpected response has sparked widespread debate. While some Nigerians criticized the students’ reaction as disrespectful, others defended them, arguing it was a harmless display of youthful exuberance.

Kukoyi reiterated the importance of fostering an environment where discipline and free expression can coexist in educational institutions. She encouraged schools to approach such situations with a sense of fairness, ensuring that students are guided rather than unfairly penalized for spontaneous moments of excitement.
