“I Will Run in 2027” — Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has put an end to speculations surrounding his political future, declaring clearly that he will contest for the presidency in the 2027 general elections.

In recent weeks, reports had suggested that Atiku might step aside from the race, prioritizing national development over personal ambition. The rumors gained traction after Professor Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, representing Atiku at a political event in Lagos, was quoted as saying the former vice president was not desperate to occupy Aso Rock.

Olateju reportedly told the gathering during the defection of several political heavyweights to the African Democratic Congress (ADC):

“Atiku Abubakar’s mission is to build a better Nigeria. It’s not about being president at all costs, but about establishing a government that truly works for Nigerians.”

However, Atiku swiftly debunked the statement in a phone conversation with journalist and media scholar, Dr. Tunde Olusunle, from his holiday residence in the United Arab Emirates. He clarified that no such position had been previewed with him, stressing that Olateju was not authorized to speak on his behalf.

“I did not issue that statement,” Atiku said. “Whenever someone represents me at events, we always align on what should be communicated. In this particular case, there was no such engagement. Prof. Olateju was not speaking for me.”

Reaffirming his intention, Atiku declared:

“I will run in 2027. Nigeria must be rescued from the intensive care unit it has been consigned to. The poverty, anguish, deceit, and unchecked corruption are intolerable. Our values have been eroded, accountability is absent, and the suffering of our people is worsening. I will offer myself to lead the reclamation and reconstruction of our beloved country.”

Atiku further noted that the coalition he is driving through the ADC is aimed at mobilizing a broad-based movement for national liberation. While acknowledging that the party was recently adopted and still finding its footing, he insisted it holds the capacity to disrupt the political establishment.

“ADC is building a mass movement that will shock the world,” Atiku said confidently. “We will challenge the status quo in ways that will leave skeptics speechless.”

It will be recalled that Dr. Tunde Olusunle, who confirmed Atiku’s clarification, served as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the former vice president during the 2023 presidential campaign.
