Firstlady Lami Fintiri flags off school garden campaign in GMMC Yola

Her Excellency Hajiya Lami Ahmadu Fintiri flagged off the ceremony of the primary and secondary school, school garden organized by the office of the First Lady of the of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, through her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in collaboration with the office of the wife of the Governor of Adamawa State through the Fresh Air Pro-Life Empowerment Foundation and the State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development.

The event was held at General Murtala Mohammed College (GMMC) in Yola, with coordinating principals across the 21 local government areas of Adamawa State.

Conveying Her Excellency message, the Commissioner of Education, Hon. Dr. Garba Umar Pella, stated that the Primary and Secondary Schools Garden initiative, under the visionary guidance of Senator Oluremi Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), is a significant step towards revitalizing agriculture in schools and embedding a passion for this vital sector in the hearts of the young students.

He emphasized that agriculture is not just a sector of the economy; it is a way of life that has long served as the economy’s foundation. This initiative, spearheaded by Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Hajiya Lami Ahmadu Fintiri, aims to reverse this trend by reviving the old system of school gardens, instilling a passion for agriculture in the hearts of the youth and inspiring them to explore careers in farming, agribusiness, or agricultural research.

Her Excellency Hajiya Lami Ahmadu Fintiri has indicated that she will fully support this initiative through her foundation, the Fresh Air Pro-Life Empowerment Foundation. In addition to the substantial RHI mega prize of 25 million naira for the best school, she will be awarding additional award or prizes to the top three schools that excel in their gardening projects.

The first prize is one million naira (N1.000,000.00), the second prize is five hundred thousand naira (N500,000.00), and the third prize will be three hundred thousand naira (N300,000.00). These incentives are intended to promote healthy competition, develop creativity, and reward excellence among the students and schools.

Lami Fintiri urged all stakeholders—teachers, parents, government officials, and most importantly, students—to fully support this project and cultivate these gardens with care and dedication so that they might serve as living classrooms where knowledge develop alongside plants.

She expressed deep thanks and gratitude to Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and her foundation, RHI, for her unwavering commitment to this cause and leadership in bringing this initiative to life and fruition. She also thanked the Adamawa State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development for their partnership and dedication to this initiative.

“As we flag off this initiative today, remember that the seeds we plant in these gardens represent the seeds of knowledge, responsibility, and hope that we are sowing in the minds of our young ones. Let’s nurture and care for these gardens to create a happier, more affluent future for all.”

During the event, the Commissioner of Education and Capital Human Development, Dr. Garba Umar Pella, emphasized the potential of school gardens to provide substantial benefits.

He stated that these gardens could enable boarding schools to produce their own food, significantly supporting their immediate communities. If nurtured properly, the school gardens could even be expanded onto larger plots of land, enhancing their impact.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Lucy Tuwanga expressed heartfelt gratitude to Hajiya Lami Fintiri for her efforts in reviving the old system of school gardens. She highlighted that this initiative will have a profound and lasting impact on their lives, both during their schooling years and beyond.
