Easter: Bishop Mamza frees five prison inmates in Yola, donates foodstuffs

In the spirit of Easter festival, the Bishop of Yola Catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Stephen Dami Mamza has today freed five inmates of Yolde Pate correctional facility.

In addition, the cleric also donated food and non food items to the correctional center.

Items donated include, 10 bags of 25kg of rice, 20 cartons of multi-purpose soap, 3 cartons of Izal antiseptic, 10 pieces of medium sized mats and assorted drugs.

Speaking to newsmen after presenting the donations, Mamza said he did it in the spirit of the Easter period and to confer with the inmates during the occasion so that they will also have a sense of belonging.

He urged the inmates especially those whose freedom he facilitated to go out and show the world that they are reformed person through good character.

The Bishop also thanked the prison officials for their friendly disposition adding that such display of good purpose and excellent leadership is responsible for the good rapport between the facility and the Catholic Diocese over the years.

He told the inmates to manage the items he brought noting that the high cost of items in the market has drastically reduced the purchasing power of the urging them to make judicious use of the items presented.

While thanking Bishop Dami Mamza for the renewed gesture, the Assistant Comptroller of Corrections Musa Usman Gambaki expressed appreciation for the various interventions of Mamza and Yola Catholic Diocese for a long time.

He also thanked the inmates for the cooperation and peaceful coexistence in the facility adding that such gesture is responsible for the goodwill the facility is attracting from the outside world.

Gambaki told them to maintain the tempo and also urged those who will breathe the air of freedom to show the world that they are good ambassadors of the facility.

While responding on behalf of the freed inmates, Micheal Tizhe who spoke in an emotion laden voice due to the impromptu nature of their release said they will turn a new lease of life.

He said his freedom rather came to him as a surprise because nobody visited him since his incarceration over 8 months ago thanking the Bishop for remembering people like him.
