ADC Accuses Tinubu Administration of Secret Plot to Undermine Opposition Coalition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised serious concerns about what it describes as a covert and coordinated attempt by the Tinubu-led federal government to derail the momentum of Nigeria’s emerging opposition coalition.

In a statement released on Monday, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating a secret meeting with former ADC state chairmen and key party leaders from the North East and North West regions. The purpose, the ADC claims, is to weaken internal party cohesion and derail the opposition’s growing influence.

“We have obtained credible intelligence that this gathering is not for any noble national cause like peacebuilding or security. Rather, it’s a deliberate effort to intimidate and manipulate our leaders into a scheme designed to sabotage the coalition,” the statement said.

According to Abdullahi, this development reflects a broader strategy to create internal friction within the ADC, delegitimize its current leadership, and stunt the party’s emergence as a strong alternative to the ruling party.

He described the move as an assault on Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, stating, “Engaging ADC leaders in underhanded political schemes while the nation faces pressing issues is a betrayal of public trust. This is how democracies slide into one-party rule—through fear, coercion, and manipulation.”

The ADC further alleged that the unveiling of the coalition on July 1st and the ADC’s repositioning on July 2nd have unsettled the ruling APC, which, the party says, is now resorting to old tactics to weaken the opposition.

“This movement has become a rallying point for Nigerians exhausted by hardship, deception, and misrule. It belongs to all citizens who want justice, accountability, and a new vision for the country. We will not stand by while a few desperate individuals attempt to hijack our democratic future,” the party warned.

The ADC also issued a direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to rein in those within his administration allegedly working against the opposition. They challenged him to uphold democratic values by allowing political plurality to thrive.

“If the Jonathan administration had acted with such hostility toward the opposition in 2015, the APC would not have had the opportunity to come to power, and Tinubu would not be president today,” the statement concluded.
