Rivers Assembly Responds to Tinubu’s Emergency Rule: “This Isn’t What We Wanted”

The suspended Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed disappointment over the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, stating that it was not what they had hoped for. However, the lawmakers have pledged their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision and assured the public of their commitment to upholding the directive.

Suspended Lawmakers Pledge Compliance

Following President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, the Assembly, along with Governor Siminialayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, was suspended.

In a statement released on Wednesday, March 19, Speaker Martin Amaewhule emphasized that while the lawmakers did not wish for this outcome, they recognized the president’s decision as being in the best interest of the nation.

“As an Assembly, we assure you, our constituents, that we will abide by this declaration, even though it is not what we prayed for. Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country. Therefore, we urge everyone to remain calm as the Sole Administrator appointed by the President takes charge,” Amaewhule stated.

Blame on Governor Fubara

The Assembly attributed the crisis in the state to Governor Fubara, accusing him of failing to govern in line with his constitutional oath.

Meanwhile, military presence has reportedly increased in Rivers, with soldiers and armored tanks moving into the government house in response to the emergency rule.

Call for Public Support

Despite the political turmoil, the suspended lawmakers have urged Rivers residents to support the newly appointed Sole Administrator.

“We thank you all for your continued support, prayers, and understanding. We expect that you will give the Sole Administrator the necessary backing to steer the state through this period of emergency,” the statement read.

With the unfolding political developments, all eyes remain on how the state will navigate this unprecedented crisis.
