President Tinubu makes new appointment

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Olatunji Bello as the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Vice-Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

His appointment is subject to confirmation by the Senate.

Mr Bello takes over from Babatunde Irukera who was sacked by the president in January.

Irukera was sacked alongside the director-general of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Alex Okoh, in conformity with plans to restructure and reposition critical agencies of the Federal Government towards protecting the rights of Nigerian consumers and providing a strong basis for enhanced contributions to the nation’s economy by key growth-enabling institutions.

It is also worthy to note that the Senate had on Wednesday approved the request of the President to remove Mr Irukera from office following a motion moved by the Senate Leader Senator Bamidele Opeyemi (Ekiti Central) on the floor of the senate.

Although Sen Osita Ogwu (EnuguWest) opined that Mr Irukera had not finished his tenure in office, but the Senate President Akbabio cleared him that “it is not the duty of the senate to question the presidents nomination, but either to approve or reject”. He said
