NUC Verifies Resources for Adamawa State University’s Proposed MBBS Programme

Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi, has played host to a team from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for a critical accreditation exercise ahead of the proposed commencement of its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme.

The visit was aimed at conducting a comprehensive resource verification to assess the adequacy of facilities, personnel, and infrastructure. The NUC team also provided guidance in areas requiring improvement before final approval is granted for the medical programme.

The initiative is expected to significantly boost the state’s medical workforce and address chronic admission challenges faced by indigenes who currently have to seek medical education outside Adamawa.

The NUC delegation was led by Abubakar Muhammed Girei, and included Professor Mohamed Manga, Professor Auwal Abubakar, and Mahmud Abdulmajeed. Upon arrival, the team paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor to outline the purpose of their assignment.

Speaking during the visit, Girei emphasized that the NUC’s role is to support the growth of Nigeria’s education system. He noted that the exercise should not be perceived as a fault-finding mission, assuring the university of a transparent and objective process.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Augustine Clement, stated that the establishment of the medical college aligns with the vision of the state government to improve healthcare delivery and reduce pressure on sister institutions. He further highlighted that the state government has already commenced key projects, including the procurement of medical equipment, furniture, and academic materials, to ensure a smooth take-off of the programme.

The NUC team subsequently conducted a rigorous inspection of facilities at the College of Medical and Allied Health Sciences, including laboratories, to evaluate their standards and readiness. Other areas inspected include the university library, e-library, pre-medical hostels, and staff offices.

At press time, the NUC had not released its final report, but university officials expressed optimism that the verification would pave the way for the commencement of the MBBS programme in the next academic session.
