New Curriculum: NERDC Publishes Approved Subjects for Schools
The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) has formally released the authentic subject list for the newly revised basic and secondary school curriculum.
The announcement serves to halt the spread of unauthorised versions circulating online.
In a communique signed by Executive Secretary Professor Salisu Shehu, the Council instructed the public to “disregard all other versions of the new curriculum circulating online”, citing the need to disprove “unauthentic versions” and uphold educational integrity.
A nationwide sensitisation campaign and teacher training initiative have been scheduled to support effective roll-out, beginning with entry classes (Primary 1, Primary 4, JSS 1, and SSS 1) at the start of each three-year phase.
Implementation will align with the approach endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Education.

PRIMARY 1–3
English Studies
Mathematics
Nigerian Languages (one Nigerian language)
Basic Science
Physical & Health Education
Christian Religious Studies (for Christian pupils only) and Islamic Studies (for Muslim pupils only)
Nigerian History
Social and Citizenship Studies
Cultural & Creative Arts (CCA)
Arabic Language (optional)
NB: Minimum of 9 and maximum of 10 subjects.
PRIMARY 4–6
English Studies
Mathematics
Nigerian Languages (one Nigerian language)
Basic Science and Technology
Physical & Health Education
Basic Digital Literacy
Christian Religious Studies (for Christian pupils only) and Islamic Studies (for Muslim pupils only)
Nigerian History
Social and Citizenship Studies
Cultural & Creative Arts (CCA)
Pre-vocational studies
French (optional)
Arabic Language (optional)
NB: Minimum of 11 and maximum of 12 or 13 subjects.
JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL 1–3

Trade subjects: Students to choose one trade subject out of the following: solar Photovoltaic installation and maintenance, fashion design and garment making, livestock farming, beauty and cosmetology, computer hardware and GSM repairs, and orticulture and crop production

NB: Minimum of 12 subjects; Maximum of 13 or 14 subjects.
