Lake Chad Crisis Deepens: Governor Fintiri Urges Immediate Action at Governors’ Forum

Fintiri underscored the need for coordinated efforts to combat the dire situation caused by climate change, population growth, and other factors, which have led to the lake’s dramatic shrinkage by 90% over the past six decades, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

“The depletion of the lake has had devastating effects on local economies, particularly fishing and agriculture,” Fintiri stated. “Communities are left grappling with water scarcity, poverty, and food insecurity.”

The crisis has not only impacted livelihoods but also contributed to escalating insecurity in the region. Fintiri noted the connection between the environmental decline and the rise of terrorist groups who exploit the growing vulnerability of local communities. “The insurgency has displaced millions, fractured social cohesion, and destabilized state institutions,” he added.

Despite these challenges, Fintiri remained optimistic, praising both global and local efforts to mitigate the crisis. He reaffirmed his support for the Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery, and Resilience (RSSRR), a framework aimed at fostering cross-border cooperation and ensuring sustainable recovery efforts.

During the forum, regional leaders deliberated on strategies to rebuild the Lake Chad Basin, emphasizing the importance of peace, security, and sustainable development to ensure a resilient community in the future.

“The world is watching. Africa is anxious. The Basin continues to bleed, but our people remain hopeful,” Governor Fintiri concluded.
