Vice President Shettima Leads Service Chiefs, Others to Armed Forces Remembrance

The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, Friday, 9th January 2026, led the nation’s military leadership and senior government officials in solemn prayers for the nation’s fallen heroes.

The Vice President was at the forefront of the Juma’at Service held at the National Mosque, Abuja, marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

Senator Shettima was joined by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, NAM, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, and a representative of the Chief of Air Staff. The Service Chiefs and other senior military officers formed a core part of the congregation.

The annual event is a cornerstone of national activities to honour the bravery, loyalty, and ultimate sacrifice of military personnel in defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also serves to celebrate the dedication of serving men and women while seeking divine intervention for lasting peace, unity, and security across the nation.

The gathering reflected a unified front of national leadership. Also in attendance were the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulazeez Musa Yar’Adua; Heads of various Security Agencies; Principal Staff Officers from the Defence and Service Headquarters; and several other senior government officials.

Their presence underscored a collective national tribute to the fallen and a robust reaffirmation of support for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
