General TY Danjuma Honoured as First Gang Paan of Ganye Chiefdom

General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd.), was conferred with the  traditional title in Ganye Chiefdom—Gang Paan Ganye, meaning “the protector or shield of the land.”

The title, bestowed upon him by His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Adamu Sanda, OON, during the 25th Silver Jubilee Celebration of the Gangwari Ganye’s reign, marks a historic milestone in the chiefdom’s annals. It is the first time the prestigious title has been awarded, and it fittingly goes to a man whose life has been defined by service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the unity and security of Nigeria.

The conferment ceremony, though richly adorned in pageantry and tradition, carried an undertone of somber reflection. General Danjuma revealed that the title, initially conceived over a decade ago, had to be postponed for ten years due to the worsening insecurity plaguing Nigeria. His Royal Highness, in a show of prudence and concern for national stability, deferred the honour until conditions allowed for a dignified and safe celebration.

“The rampant insecurity made His Royal Highness gamble with the timing of this honor,” Danjuma remarked, highlighting how deeply Nigeria’s security challenges have affected even its most sacred traditions.

The title Gang Paan, translated as “shield” or “protector” of Ganye, is more than ceremonial. It is a profound acknowledgment of Danjuma’s legacy as a military leader, elder statesman, philanthropist, and unifier. Throughout his career—from the battlefield to the corridors of political influence—General Danjuma has exemplified courage, patriotism, and service to the nation.

In his remarks, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State lauded Danjuma as a “father and role model,” praying for his continued good health and acknowledging his pivotal role in Nigeria’s development. Fintiri emphasized that Danjuma’s leadership remains an enduring inspiration to present and future generations.

The Gangwari Ganye, Dr. Umaru Adamu Sanda, extolled General Danjuma as a “father of the land,” expressing deep gratitude for his presence at the jubilee and for accepting the chiefdom’s highest traditional honor. The title, he noted, reflects Danjuma’s lifelong role as a guardian of peace and progress not just in Ganye but across Nigeria.

The Silver Jubilee ceremony, held in the historic town of Ganye, was a grand affair. A colourful  cultural dances, and the presence of distinguished guests—including Vice President Kashim Shettima (represented), former SGF Boss Mustapha, federal and state lawmakers, and sons and daughters of Chamba Land—lent prestige to the occasion.

Yet beyond the pomp, the event served as a call to action. General Danjuma, in his address, urged the government to remain vigilant and proactive in confronting Nigeria’s security crisis, which continues to undermine the country’s stability and cultural heritage.

In bestowing the title of Gang Paan Ganye upon General TY Danjuma, the Ganye Chiefdom not only honoured a legend—it affirmed its belief in the enduring values of courage, unity, and protection. For the people of Ganye and indeed all Nigerians, the shield is both a symbol and a promise—that even in turbulent times, there are those who stand firm for the good of all.
