Defence Headquarters Dismisses Nigeria’s Global Terrorism Ranking

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has rejected the latest Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report, which ranked Nigeria as the sixth most terrorism-affected country in the world.

Reacting to the March 5 report, the DHQ stated that no external body could provide a more accurate assessment of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts than its own security agencies.

Speaking in Abuja, Maj. Gen. Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, urged Nigerians and the media to disregard the ranking, stressing that local security assessments are more reliable.

“Imagine something happening in my house, and I, as the head, give an account. Now, someone from outside comes and reports on it. Which would be more accurate—the one I provide or the external report?” Kangye questioned.

He also called on journalists to prioritize factual reporting on Nigeria’s security situation, emphasizing that they have access to credible updates during the military’s weekly briefings.

On the security situation in the Southeast, Kangye reiterated the military’s efforts to neutralize threats from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

He explained that Operation Udo Ka was launched to restore stability in the region, similar to Operation Hadin Kai in the Northeast.

“Many locals remain indoors out of fear, but our commanders under Operation Udo Ka are working tirelessly to rid the Southeast of IPOB/ESN influence,” he assured.
