CAN Backs Akpabio, Rejects Resignation Calls Amid Harassment Allegations

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dismissed calls for Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s resignation following allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The association insists that there is no concrete evidence to warrant such demands.

Meanwhile, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has criticized the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), accusing it of politicizing the controversy to undermine Southern leaders and influence the 2027 elections. Both groups cautioned against sensationalism and political interference, emphasizing the need for a fair and measured approach to the issue.

CAN Urges Restraint and Fairness

Speaking on behalf of CAN, Rev. Joseph Hayab, Chairman for the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, described the situation as unfortunate and called for national elders to mediate. He emphasized the importance of handling the matter responsibly to protect the integrity of the National Assembly.

“There is a need for elders to step in. Akpabio and Natasha have people they respect and highly regard. Members of the National Assembly must take responsibility in addressing this issue,” Hayab stated during a media engagement in Kaduna.

CAN firmly rejected demands for Akpabio’s resignation, arguing that such calls were premature and lacked merit in the absence of substantial evidence. The association urged the public to avoid taking sides, warning that doing so could escalate tensions and deepen national divisions.

“Any group calling for Akpabio’s resignation should desist, as no one has been proven guilty in this matter. Allegations of sexual harassment

must be treated with seriousness, but also with fairness and sobriety,” CAN added.

Media Caution and Governance Priorities

CAN also called on the media to avoid sensationalizing the case, warning that reckless reporting could worsen existing regional and gender divisions. The association further urged lawmakers to focus on governance, particularly the passage of the 2025 national budget, rather than being distracted by the controversy.

As the case unfolds, CAN emphasized the need for a balanced and just resolution, urging all parties involved to exercise patience and allow due process to take its course.
