Bayelsa Move to Introduce Chinese Language in School Curriculum

The Bayelsa State Government is actively planning to prioritize the teaching and learning of Ijaw, French, and Chinese languages, alongside science and mathematics, in public schools.

The focus on these languages and core science subjects aims to prepare children for lucrative career opportunities.

Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo shared this initiative during a visit from the state chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria.

He justified the inclusion of Chinese in the curriculum, citing China’s global economic influence. Ewhrudjakpo expressed support for STEM programs and emphasized the government’s deliberate emphasis on recruiting teachers in science, ICT, mathematics, and other key subjects.

He encouraged teamwork within APWEN and stressed the importance of including male students in their initiatives. The deputy governor highlighted the challenges in the engineering profession, urging closer collaboration for increased visibility.

APWEN leaders discussed their efforts to introduce the girl-child to engineering at the basic education level, concluding the visit with the presentation of two special awards to the deputy governor.
