 ASUU and FG Conclude Historic Agreement After 16 Years of Negotiation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reached a historic agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria after 16 years since the last renegotiation.

This new agreement, born from years of protracted discussions, addresses critical issues including conditions of service, funding, university autonomy, academic freedom, and broader systemic reforms to tackle decay and reverse brain drain.

Despite challenges and delays, a resolution was achieved following the establishment of multiple renegotiation committees since 2017, culminating in the signing of the 2025 Renegotiated Agreement in December 2025.

The Minister of Education,Dr. Marufu Olatunji Alausa, expressed appreciation to Mallam Yayale Ahmed, and his committee for playing a pivotal role in driving the negotiations forward.

Alausa also commended the Alhaji Yayale’s led committee tireless efforts, integrity, and commitment for being instrumental in reaching the agreement,with ASUU leaders also expressing their gratitude for their contributions.

He further reaffirmed government’s commitment to faithful implementation of the agreement under the Renewed Hope Agenda, and announced new incentives for
full-time Professors and Readers.

Meanwhile, the President, Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) Prof Chris Piwuna, on behalf of the union thanked the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Moruf Alausa, and other stakeholders, including the National Universities Commission (NUC) and ASUU’s trustees, for their continued support throughout the lengthy negotiation process.

The union raised concerns that even though the agreement represents a major step forward, challenges persist, frowning at government interference in university autonomy, particularly in the arbitrary dissolution of governing councils and the politicized appointment of vice chancellors.
